What does BIG collect data for?
As a statutory health insurance fund BIG ensures that the health of its policyholders is maintained, restored or improved. Data need to be collected, processed and used to this end. In accordance with the legal provisions (§ 284 SGB V, for long-term care insurance with health insurance funds from § 94 SGB XI) BIG collects data for the following aims:
- To establish the status of insurance
- To issue the health insurance card
- To settle issues concerning premiums
- To check and award benefits
- To assist policyholders in the case of malpractice
- Reimbursement
- To establish the status of co-payments, to calculate the assessment ceiling
- To reimburse premiums
- For consultation with the Medical Review Board
- To settle accounts with care providers
- To check the efficiency and quality of care providers
- To settle accounts with other care funding agencies
- To settle claims for refunds and damages with third parties
- To prepare, agree upon and implement morbidity-based compensation structures
- To prepare, implement and assure the quality of pilot projects and integrated forms of health care provision
- To implement the risk structure compensation scheme and monitor the risk pool
- To prepare and implement disease management programmes – DMP
- To conclude and complete agreements for rates for care, arrangements for reimbursement and agreements on services and quality
- For advice on measures for prevention and rehabilitation
- To coordinate nursing aid

Who does BIG pass data on to?
BIG passes data on to the following agencies only in conjunction with the statutory regulations of the SGB or other legal provisions:
- Agencies for pension and accident insurance
- Bundesagentur für Arbeit
- Financial institutes (as part of payment transactions)
- Employers and disbursement agencies
- Pension authorities
- Care provider
- Armed forces administration
- In special cases notification in accordance with §§ 67d ff. SGB X,
- Medical Review Board for Health Insurance Funds (MDK)
Provisions for deletion of data
Social data are deleted in accordance with the statutory regulations for accounting in social insurance (SRVwV) and the relevant provisions of the SGB (e.g. §§ 84 SGB X, 304 SGB V, 107 SGB XI).
Transmission of data to third countries
BIG does not transmit data to third countries.
