With the best of care always: BIG pays all the costs for prescription medicines and surgical dressings, minus the statutory co-payment.

Payment of costs up to the fixed amount
The actual dispensing price of a medicine forms the basis – provided it is under the level of the fixed amount as stipulated by law. If the dispensing price is higher than the fixed amount, you will incur additional expenses. In this case, your doctor or pharmacist will inform you in good time about it and give you advice. Costs for so-called over-the-counter medicines are not covered, unless they are recognised for your therapy or treatment.
Children are exempt from co-payments.
Policyholders under the age of 18 generally pay nothing. BIG direkt gesund will also reimburse you for the costs for prescription medicine for the following illnesses:
- coughs and colds
- flu-like illnesses
- oral and throat medicinal products (apart from fungal infections)
- laxatives and medicines to prevent motion sickness
BIG will also pay for over-the-counter medicine for children under the age of 12 and adolescents with developmental disorders (up to the age of 18). In the case of medicines with a very low dispensing price or those with questionable therapeutic benefits, the costs are not paid for.
